Effects of 12 Weeks Elastic Band Exercise on Body Composition, Cardiorespiratory Function and Physical Fitness of Middle-Aged Obese Women

Abstract
Background: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of two different types (Blue-Band 14 repetitions; BB14, Red-Band 25 repetitions; RB25) of 12 weeks band-exercise on obese middle-aged women.

Methods: Obese middle-aged women participated in this study consisting of two different intensity of exercise.
Subjects in one experimental group were participated to BB14 which means high intensity and low repetitions, and
in the other group were subjected to RB25, meaning low intensity and high repetitions. Body composition, WHR, blood pressure, resting heart rate, fitness were evaluated before and after exercise.

Results: There were significant differences in WHR, resting heart rate, muscular endurance, flexibility, power,
and agility after 12 weeks of BB14. Significant differences were found in WHR, resting heart rate, muscular endurance, cardiac endurance, flexibility, balance, and agility in the RB25. But, there were no significant differences in body composition of both groups, BB14 and RB25. In analysis between groups, there were no significant differences in body composition, WHR, blood pressure. However, significant differences in resting heart rate(F = 3.789, P = 0.035) and agility(F =
4.370, P = 0.023) were found in only BB14.

Conclusion: These findings suggest that 12 weeks of band-exercise made positive effects in resting heart rate
associated with cardiopulmonary function and WHR associated with visceral fat. But band-exercise made no
differences in body composition in both groups, which is strongly associated with obesity. Therefore, band exercise
should be done along with different types of exercise for the purpose of obesity treatment.
